And with it, Iranian authorities took another step in restructuring the state to reward the forces that help keep them in power – handing wider decision-making roles to the formidable Revolutionary Guard and its vast paramilitary network that have led the crackdowns against opposition protesters.

The Revolutionary Guard has always been a centerpiece of Iran’s Islamic establishment. But the latest door 강남 마사지 opened to its militia wing suggests a deepening policy role by Iran’s most hard-line groups as opposition forces grow bolder in their demands and the West considers tighter sanctions over its nuclear impasse with Tehran.

The Basij will again be out in force Thursday for expected protest marches to coincide with events marking the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Their attempts to crush the anti-government movement have been well documented since Ahmadinejad’s disputed re-election last June, including the trademark Basiji motorcycle charges in protest crowds.

What’s perhaps less noticed – but with even deeper significance – is the evolving role of the huge Basij force from loosely organized Islamic vigilantes to a more cohesive force with increasing channels to Iran’s leadership and security apparatus.

“It’s clear that the Revolutionary Guard has been increasingly inserted in Iran’s decision-making equation during the crisis,” said Patrick Clawson, deputy director at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. “Expanding the role of the Basij is a natural extension of this.”

The Basij’s big brother, the Revolutionary Guard, has long been a pillar of Iran’s regime as a force separate from the ordinary armed forces. The Guard now has a hand in every critical area including missile development, oil resources, dam building, road construction, telecommunications and nuclear technology.

It also has absorbed the paramilitary Basij as a full-fledged part of its command structure – giving the militia greater funding and a stronger presence in Iran’s internal politics.

The chief of the Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, often accuses dissidents of waging a “soft revolution” against the Islamic system and says forces such as the Basij are needed more than ever to quash internal threats.

The Basij has its roots as volunteer fighters during the 1980-88 war with Iraq. It then developed as a grass-roots defender of the system – taking on roles such as Islamic morality police at checkpoints and parks or as shock troops busting up pro-reform gatherings or publications.

Iran’s meltdown since June has made the Basij into a front-line force against the opposition.

Security forces turned to them as neighbor-by-neighbor informants with hundreds of thousands of eyes and ears in every corner of the country. They also became a first-call attack squad against protests, often roaring into battle on motorcycles and armed with batons.

At least eight people were killed in clashes between security forces and protests in the last major opposition march in late December.

On Monday, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, vowed to deliver a “punch in the mouth” to opposition groups if they follow through with calls for marches on Thursday during state-run celebrations of the Islamic Revolution.

He said the Basij would be deployed to provide “order and security.”

It was the latest nod by the ruling clerics that the Basij is moving deeper into the fold.

At the late January Cabinet meeting, one of Ahmadinejad’s top advisers, Mohammad Reza Rahimi, made a speech praising the Basij before the vote to give the group an open invitation to get involved with decisions and policies in every ministry, according to Rajanews.com, a pro-Ahmadinejad Web site. The report also appeared in other government-allied sites as well as some opposition blogs.

Basij leaders also are reportedly asking for another budget increase for the next Iranian year that starts in late March. Last year, the Basij funding was boosted a staggering 200 percent to more than $500 million, according to Sobh-e Sadegh, a publication controlled by the Revolutionary Guard.

There has been no public pushback from authorities despite a severe fiscal crunch, which has brought unpopular measures such as plans to end government-subsidized gasoline prices.

No one in the embattled government wants to risk ruffling groups such as the Basij, which has remained among the strongest supporters of Ahmadinejad.

“They can serve almost as Ahmadinejad’s private army,” said William O. Beeman, a University of Minnesota professor who has written on Iranian affairs.

The higher political profile for the Basij also appears to fit into efforts to expand hard-line oversight in schools and universities. The Basij have been increasingly active in recruitment as the political tensions grow.

Precise numbers on Basij membership are not published, but some estimates range as high as 1 million or more.

“If they acquire more power as a body, they will be able to recruit more forces who will see this as an instant route toward social mobility and power,” said Beeman.

“The Simpsons Movie” turned doughnuts into dollars over the weekend, 대구 안마 raking in $71.9 million to debut as the top movie this week.

The big-screen tale of the lovable, if dysfunctional, family rolled over the competition, sending last week’s top movie, Universal Studio’s “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry,” into second place with $19 million, a 44 percent drop.

“Homer’s odyssey paid off,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers.

The film, which featured the antics of yellow-hued Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie and a host of motley characters, grossed an average of $18,320 on 3,922 screens across the country and also opened strongly in 70 foreign markets.

“We are ecstatic,” said Chris Aronson, senior vice president for distribution at 20th Century Fox. “It far exceeded even the most optimistic of expectations.”

People magazine assistant managing editor and Early Show entertainment contributor Jess Cagle says the most “The Simpsons Movie” was expected to take in on its debut weekend was $40-50 million.

The hand-drawn movie had the fifth best opening weekend of the year, beating such notable contenders as “Transformers,” from Paramount, “Ghost Rider,” from Sony Pictures and the computer-animated “Ratatouille,” from The Walt Disney Co. and Pixar Animation Studios.

“It’s unprecedented to have the longest-running sitcom of all time still on the air and have it also be the number one movie in theaters,” Dergarabedian said.

Dergarabedian praised the film’s marketing campaign, which included dressing a number of 7-Eleven stores around the country as Kwik-E-Marts, the fictional convenience stores selling such Simpsons’ favorites as Buzz Cola and Squishees.

Cagle also cited the trailer the studio created to publicize the film, which he said was itself a big hit in theaters, and the fact that the plot had been kept secret.

Another factor, according to Cagle: underestimation of the great affection the characters have with the public.

One more: the movie’s PG-13 rating — considered risky, because most animated movies are G or PG. But Cagle says it was a signal to teens that it wasn’t just a kids’ movie, that it was more risque.

Cagle ponts out that “The Simpsons Movie,” along with such films as “Transformers” and the latest Harry Potter movie, have done well enough to turn around a somewhat disappointing summer box office.

The stellar debut of “The Simpsons Movie” helped propel that take. This week’s top-12 films grossed $168.6 million, up a whopping 45 percent from the top 12 last year, which included “Miami Vice” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.”

The debut was good also news for Fox, which has done well this year with top-grossing films “Live Free or Die Hard” and “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.”

The long-awaited film version of the Fox Television show played well across the country and with all age brackets, Fox said Sunday, giving the distributor hope that it will hold its own against next week’s big opener, “The Bourne Ultimatum,” from Universal.

The weekend’s other debuts made the top 10, but lagged far behind “The Simpsons Movie.”

“No Reservations,” the Warner Bros. romantic comedy starring Catherine Zeta-Jones as a gourmet chef, earned $11.8 million.

“I Know Who Killed Me,” a Sony Pictures/Tri-Star thriller starring Lindsay Lohan, debuted in 9th place with a paltry $3.4 million.

“Who’s Your Caddy,” from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, grossed $2.9 million.

Interior Ministry spokesman Zemeri Bashary said rescuers have recovered 157 bodies from the Salang Pass, a key road that connects the Afghan capital with the north, over the past two days. The number of deaths had more than doubled from the last reported figure of 64 a day earlier, as rescue teams scrambled to reach survivors.

At a press conference in Kabul, Bashary said 1.5 miles of road have been cleared for ambulances, bulldozers and other road-clearing equipment to get through. About 2,600 people have been rescued so far, he said.

A series of avalanches that were triggered Monday along the 12,700-feet-high pass closed off roads and stranded hundreds of people in snowbound vehicles.

Some of the victims were found frozen to death inside their vehicles, while in other cases, their bodies were strewn along the road, he said.

The 1.6 mile-long Salang Tunnel, a Soviet-built landmark dating from the 1960s through the Hindu Kush mountains, had been cut off, with dozens of cars, buses and trucks jammed inside.

Bashary said 135 bodies have been taken to Parwan province to the north while the remainder were taken to Baglan province in the south.

Rescuers reached dozens more of the stranded this morning, including seven children whose mother had died.

The reported raids are part of a broad offensive by Iran’s leadership to intimidate anti-government demonstrators from trying to disrupt state-backed celebrations Thursday of the 1979 overthrow of the pro-Western monarchy.

Anti-government Web sites and blogs have called for a major turnout and urged marches to display green emblems or clothes – the color adopted by the anti-government movement since June’s disputed presidential election.

The opposition leaders have promised to join street rallies, including the Green movement founder and former presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi.

Iranian officials, however, have warned that any protests will be immediately crushed by security forces. At least eight people were killed in clashes during the last major opposition marches in late December.

The Iranian police chief, Gen. Ismail Ahmadi Moghaddam, said Wednesday that “a number” of suspected opposition supporters have been arrested in recent raids.

He gave no further details on the scope or timing of the raids, according to a report by the semiofficial Fars news agency. But he claimed some of those in custody were involved in planning demonstrations.

Some rights groups outside Iran have claimed hundreds of people have been detained in sweeps targeting suspected opposition backers.

The Fars agency – which is linked to Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard – also quoted Iran’s deputy police chief, Ahmad Reza Radan, as saying that security forces will come down hard on any displays of dissent.

“We won’t allow any space to seditionists,” he said.

Opposition groups did not appear deterred.

Web sites included detailed instructions on possible protest routes through Tehran and even offered detailed suggestions such as bringing whistles to drown out pro-government messages on loudspeakers throughout the city.

“All together let’s keep our identity and join the rally,” said a statement from Mousavi on his Web site – in an apparent reference to showing the colors of the Green movement.

“With Antonioni dies not only one of the greatest directors but also a master of modernity,” Rome Mayor Walter Veltroni said in a statement.

Antonioni depicted alienation in the modern world through sparse dialogue and long takes. Along with Federico Fellini, he helped turn post-war Italian film away from the Neorealism movement and toward a personal cinema of imagination.

In 1995, Hollywood honored his career work — about 25 films and several screenplays — with a special Oscar for lifetime achievement. By then Antonioni was a physically frail but mentally sharp 82, unable to speak but a few words because of a stroke but still translating his vision into film. The Oscar was stolen from Antonioni’s home in 1996, together with several other film prizes.

His slow-moving camera never became synonymous with box-office success, but some of his movies such “Blow-Up,” “Red Desert” and “The Passenger” reached enduring fame.

His exploration of such intellectual themes as alienation and existential malaise led Halliwell’s Film Guide to say that “L’Avventura,” Antonioni’s first critical success, made him “a hero of the highbrows.”

The critics loved that film, but the audience hissed when “L’Avventura” was presented at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival. The barest of plots, which wanders through a love affair of a couple, frustrated many viewers for its lack of action and dialogue, characteristically Antonioni.

In one point in the black-and-white film, the camera lingers and lingers on Monica Vitti, one of Antonioni’s favorite actresses, as she plays a blond, restless jet-setter.

Antonioni was born on Sept. 29, 1912, in the affluent northern city of Ferrara. He received a university degree in economics and soon began writing critiques for cinema magazines.

Antonioni’s first feature film, “Story of a Love Affair” (1950) was a tale of two lovers unable to cope with the ties binding them to their private lives.

But Antonioni grew more interested in depicting his characters’ internal turmoil rather than their daily, down-to-earth troubles. The shift induced critics to call his cinema “internal Neorealism.”

After the international critical acclaim of “L’Avventura,” which became part of a trilogy with “The Night” (1961) and “Eclipse” (1962), Antonioni’s style was established. Using sometimes a notepad, sometimes the good communication he had with his wife and sometimes just his very expressive blue eyes, Antonioni astonished the film world in 1994 to make “Beyond the Clouds,” when ailing and hampered by the effects of the stroke.

With an international cast — John Malkovich, Jeremy Irons, Irene Jacob, and Fanny Ardant — the movie wove together three episodes based on Antonioni’s book of short stories “Quel Bowling sul Tevere” (“Bowling on the Tiber”) to explore the usual Antonioni themes.

Worried that Antonioni would be too frail to finish the movie, investors had German director Wim Wenders follow the work, ready to step in if the Italian “maestro” couldn’t go on. But Wenders wound up watching in awe and letting Antonioni put his vision on film.

Antonioni is survived by his wife. He had no children. ANSA said that a funeral would be held Thursday in Antonioni’s hometown of Ferrara in northern Italy.

Nan A. Talese was with Frey on that show. At a session of a nonfiction writers’ conference in Dallas on Saturday, she accused Winfrey of “fiercely bad manners” and said she would have done nothing differently in how she handled Frey’s manuscript.

“I’m afraid I’m unapologetic of the whole thing. And the only person who should be apologetic is Oprah Winfrey,” Talese said, according to The Dallas Morning News.

As for Frey’s use of fictitious elements in his ostensibly factual account of addiction and recovery, Talese said: “When someone starts out and says, ‘I have been an alcoholic. I have lied. I have cheated.’ … You do not think this is going to be the New Testament.”

A judge approved a tentative settlement in May, calling for publishing house Random House and Frey to refund $2.35 million to those who bought his book before his appearance on Winfrey’s show.
