He said he still felt a need to direct, although he had no plans to make another feature film

Bergman died at his home in Faro, Sweden, Swedish news agency TT said, citing his daughter Eva Bergman. A cause of death wasn’t immediately available.

Through more than 50 films, Bergman’s vision encompassed all the extremes of his beloved Sweden: the claustrophobic gloom of unending winter nights, the gentle merriment of glowing summer evenings and the bleak magnificence of the island where he spent his last years.

Bergman, who approached difficult subjects such as plague and madness with inventive technique and carefully honed writing, became one of the towering figures of serious filmmaking.

He was “probably the greatest film artist, all things considered, since the invention of the motion picture camera,” Woody Allen said in a 70th birthday tribute in 1988.

Bergman first gained international attention with 1955’s “Smiles of a Summer Night,” a romantic comedy that inspired the Stephen Sondheim musical “A Little Night Music.”

“The Seventh Seal,” released in 1957, riveted critics and audiences. An allegorical tale of the medieval Black Plague years, it contains one of cinema’s most famous scenes — a knight playing chess with the shrouded figure of Death.

“I was terribly scared of death,” Bergman said of his state of mind when making the film, which was nominated for an Academy Award in the best picture category.

The film distilled the essence of Bergman’s work — high seriousness, flashes of unexpected humor and striking images.

In an interview in 2004 with Swedish broadcaster SVT, the reclusive filmmaker admitted that he was reluctant to view his work.

“I don’t watch my own films very often. I become so jittery and ready to cry … and miserable. I think it’s awful,” Bergman said.

Though best known internationally for his films, Bergman was also a prominent stage director. He worked at several playhouses in Sweden from the mid-1940s, including the Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm which he headed from 1963 to 1966. He staged many plays by the Swedish author August Strindberg, whom he cited as an inspiration.

The influence of Strindberg’s grueling and precise psychological dissections could be seen in the production that brought Bergman an even-wider audience: 1973’s “Scenes From a Marriage.” First produced as a six-part series for television, then released in a theater version, it is an intense detailing of the disintegration of a marriage.

Bergman showed his lighter side in the following year’s “The Magic Flute,” again first produced for TV. It is a fairly straight production of the Mozart opera, enlivened by touches such as repeatedly showing the face of a young girl watching the opera and comically clumsy props and costumes.

Bergman remained active later in life with stage productions and occasional TV shows. He said he still felt a need to direct, although he had no plans to make another feature film.

In the fall of 2002, Bergman, at age 84, started production on “Saraband,” a 120-minute television movie based on the two main characters in “Scenes From a Marriage.”

In a rare press conference, the reclusive director said he wrote the story after realizing he was “pregnant with a play.”

“At first I felt sick, very sick. It was strange. Like Abraham and Sarah, who suddenly realized she was pregnant,” he said, referring to biblical characters. “It was lots of fun, suddenly to feel this urge returning.”

The son of a Lutheran clergyman and a housewife, Ernst Ingmar Bergman was born in Uppsala on July 14, 1918, 대전 안마 and grew up with a brother and sister in a household of severe discipline that he described in painful detail in the autobiography “The Magic Lantern.”

More than 200 international medical relief groups have sent teams to help, and millions of dollars of donated medicine has been flown in

When the catastrophic earthquake struck Jan. 12, authorities immediately decided to make all medical care free. More than 200 international medical relief groups have sent teams to help, and millions of dollars of donated medicine has been flown in.

U.N. officials told The Associated Press they had information that about a dozen hospitals – both public and private – had begun charging patients for medicine.

Haiti Earthquake – Latest CoverageHaiti Quake: How You Can Help

The officials said they could not immediately provide the names of the hospitals but said they were in several parts of the country, including Port-au-Prince.

“The money is huge,” said Christophe Rerat of the Pan American Health Organization, the U.N. health agency in the region. He said about $1 million worth of drugs have been sent from U.N. warehouses alone to Haitian hospitals in the past three weeks.

Hospitals don’t need to charge patients to pay their staff, because Haitian Health Ministry employees are getting paid with donated money, 대구 안마 Rerat added.

U.N. officials said that beginning now, any hospital found levying fees for medicine will be cut off.

But they added the U.N. would consider continuing to supply non-governmental groups working at private hospitals hit with embargoes if the NGO can make a convincing case that none of the people it is treating are being charged.

A member of the special Haitian government commission created to deal with the post-quake medical crisis, Dr. Jean Hugues Henry, said he had no knowledge of any hospitals charging for services or medicine.

“Tomorrow, we will clarify that the government never gave anyone permission to charge for medicine and services,” he said.

Haiti now has about 90 hospitals, including public and private hospitals and field hospitals set up in the quake’s aftermath.

Since then it’s turned in to a very large, what we call, platform.” The radical rap-metal band Rage Against the Machine headlines the show, which also features Wu-Tang Clan, Talib Kweli, Cypress Hill and Mos Def — considered by hip-hop aficionados to be the best of the best

In many ways, that is what the Rock the Bells festival is about. The festival, which is currently on tour, was created in a Los Angeles club as a way to support what the promoters call “real hip hop.”

“We created Rock the Bells to support social, political, conscious hip hop,” founder Chang Weisberg said. “That was about four years ago … Since then it’s turned in to a very large, what we call, platform.”

The radical rap-metal band Rage Against the Machine headlines the show, which also features Wu-Tang Clan, Talib Kweli, Cypress Hill and Mos Def — considered by hip-hop aficionados to be the best of the best. Rapper Nas performed in Massachusetts and is slated for more shows, but didn’t make it to his native New York.

The tour kicked off in Mansfield, Mass., at the Tweeter Center and then moved on to Randalls Island in New York City where stopped for two days. Unfortunately for concert goers, Sunday’s show was a soggy one, but the 20-something (mostly white) crowd didn’t seem to mind as many passed joints and drank beer.

The acts who participated in this year’s 12-city tour are certainly among the genre’s most respected and most left leaning. Many used the stage to express their feelings about politics.

“F— George Bush!” Public Enemy hypeman Flavor Flav shouted.

“If you love real hip-hop music like Cypress Hill, Like Wu-tang, like Mos Def, say something!” he urged the crowd.

Rock the Bells is Weisberg’s attempt to salvage the music he loves as the industry continues to sell less and less albums. The live experience, 부천 안마 he said, cannot be downloaded or bought on CD and he hopes the show is able to introduce fans to artists who may not be played on the radio or MTV. The show also featured a second, smaller stage for indie rappers on the Paid Dues tour.

Weisberg, who said he personally invites the artists to perform, chose carefully. He picked the notoriously militant Public Enemy to perform because this marks their 20th year. Nas recently released a song lamenting the direction of hip hop called “Hip Hop Is Dead.” That phrase became a touchtone for Rock the Bells, and among the crowd, signs and T-shirts bear slogans refuting Nas’ claim.

“Nas is totally entitled to say exactly what he feels,” Weisberg said. “That statement has been a source of inspiration for lots of people — put that chip on peoples’ shoulders to say, you know what, hip hop is not dead.”

Pakistan: Taliban Leader Definitely Dead

Tags :

In messages to The Associated Press on Wednesday, the officials did not provide details of how or when Hakimullah Mehsud died. But it was the first time Pakistani authorities have categorically said the militant chief is dead.

The intelligence official spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak on the record.

Rumors of Mehsud’s death have swirled for 부천 안마 weeks, after a spate of U.S. missiles hit his stronghold in Pakistan’s northwest in mid-January. Mehsud was said to have died of wounds suffered in one of the strikes.

The Taliban have denied his death, but have failed to prove that he is alive.

A U.S. counterterrorism official told CBS News correspondent Bob Orr late Tuesday that “the onus is really on the Pakistani Taliban” to prove he’s not dead.

“Hakimullah certainly hasn’t shied away from the terrorist limelight before,” the official said, referring to Mehsud’s previous appearances in Taliban propaganda videos. “So, if he’s alive, why is he doing so now when there’s so much speculation about his demise?”

The U.S. has yet to officially confirm the death of Mehsud, who commands an al Qaeda-allied movement that is blamed for scores of suicide bombings and is suspected in a deadly attack on a CIA base in Afghanistan late last year.

His death would represent a major victory for Pakistan’s government and its allies in the West over the Islamic militant groups which operate along the border with Afghanistan.

Earlier this month, a U.S. intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive security matters, told the AP that American officials had reached the conclusion that Mehsud was likely dead based on collective information of U.S. intelligence agencies.

Little Julia Lira is scheduled to perform for the packed Sambadrome stadium – and for millions more around the country via live television – early Monday morning when the Viradouro samba group parades

Tags :

Little Julia Lira is scheduled to perform for the packed Sambadrome stadium – and for millions more around the country via live television – early Monday morning when the Viradouro samba group parades.

“We received the news this morning that the judge will let Julia parade,” Viradouro said spokeswoman Joice Hurtado. “The group is ecstatic that she will be able to samba.”

The Rio state agency for child protection confirmed the ruling and said it would appeal to the Justice Ministry. Calls to Judge Ivone Caetano, who decided the case, were not immediately returned.

Viradouro’s plan to make Julia its Carnival queen has created a stir in Rio and made headlines around the globe, with some child’s rights advocates saying it’s inappropriate for a young girl to be in such a traditionally sexualized role.

“The decision sets a negative precedent that will have implications across Brazil,” said Carlos Nicodemos, who as director of the Rio de Janeiro state Council for the Defense of Children and Adolescents had asked the court to block Julia’s participation.

Nicodemos said he worries about what message it sends to a nation that has long had a problem with sexual exploitation of children, especially in the lawless Amazon region.

Julia’s father, Marco – who is also the president of Viradouro – has said concerns about the girl’s well-being are overblown. He says the girl will wear a costume that is not too skimpy for a 7-year-old, and both he and his wife will watch her closely to make sure she doesn’t get too tired during the 80-minute parade.

More than just a massive street party, Rio’s Carnival parade is also a fierce competition between 12 top-tier samba “schools” whose winner is hailed by fans across Brazil.

Viradouro, which won the title in 1997, 부천 안마 is no stranger to controversy. In 2008, a judge blocked the group from putting a dancer dressed as Adolf Hitler on a float loaded with naked people representing Holocaust victims.
