The book was a best-seller after Winfrey chose it for her book club in fall 2005. Frey later acknowledged that the memoir contained many fictitious episodes, and 대전 마사지 Winfrey, who initially defended the author, denounced him in person on her TV show.

Nan A. Talese was with Frey on that show. At a session of a nonfiction writers’ conference in Dallas on Saturday, she accused Winfrey of “fiercely bad manners” and said she would have done nothing differently in how she handled Frey’s manuscript.

“I’m afraid I’m unapologetic of the whole thing. And the only person who should be apologetic is Oprah Winfrey,” Talese said, according to The Dallas Morning News.

As for Frey’s use of fictitious elements in his ostensibly factual account of addiction and recovery, Talese said: “When someone starts out and says, ‘I have been an alcoholic. I have lied. I have cheated.’ … You do not think this is going to be the New Testament.”

A judge approved a tentative settlement in May, calling for publishing house Random House and Frey to refund $2.35 million to those who bought his book before his appearance on Winfrey’s show.

Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels was Martin’s best man, he said

Tags :

Former Nebraska Sen. Bob Kerrey — a friend of Martin’s — presided over Saturday’s ceremony, Alan Nierob said. Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels was Martin’s best man, he said.

Most of the roughly 75 guests — who included Tom Hanks, 전주 마사지 Diane Keaton, Eugene Levy, Carl Reiner and Ricky Jay — were not told that Martin and Stringfield would wed when they were invited to his home for a “party,” Nierob said. The ensuing nuptials were a surprise to them, he said.

Martin, 61, was previously married to actress Victoria Tennant, whom he divorced in 1994 after about 8 years together, Nierob said.

It was the first marriage for Stringfield, 35, a writer and former staffer for The New Yorker magazine.

The two had dated for about three years, Nierob said.

Martin delivered his vows sporting an Inspector Clouseau mustache he let grow in for his appearance in the upcoming sequel to 2006’s “Pink Panther” remake.

His other movies include “Planes, Trains & Automobiles,” “L.A. Story,” “Parenthood,” and “Father of the Bride.”

His novel “Shopgirl” was made into a 2005 film starring himself and Claire Danes.

The wedding was first reported by The Insider, a CBS celebrity news show.

Another army official said the helicopter’s pilot and gunner are missing and feared dead

The attack came on the day the country’s top civilian security official told the Associated Press that . It was the government’s first categorical confirmation of the death of the feared militant, whose passing is likely to weaken, but not vanquish, the al Qaeda-linked insurgent network he led.

“I saw him running and jumping into the Khasadar vehicle and then an explosion pushed me down to the ground some 50 yards away,” said Afridi, using the official name of the tribal police.

Rasheed Khan, a local government official, said the blast killed 10 policemen, six civilians and one paramilitary officer.

Police official Ibrahim Khan, who survived the explosion because he was outside the vehicle, said the blast also injured about a dozen other civilians.

“I was about 30 yards away when a huge explosion occurred and I fell on the ground,” said Khan. “I looked back and found our vehicle destroyed and my colleagues in a pool of blood.”

No group has claimed responsibility, but Taliban militants often target Pakistani security forces.

Reports of Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud’s death emerged after a spate of U.S. missiles hit his stronghold in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal belt in mid-January. Mehsud was said to have died of wounds suffered in one of the strikes in the Waziristan region – another big victory for the CIA-led missile campaign that killed Mehsud’s predecessor just six months ago.

The Taliban have repeatedly denied his death, but backed off an initial promise to prove the 28-year-old was still alive. The militant group also denied his predecessor’s death for weeks until the succession question was settled.

In a response to an AP query, Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik, wrote, “Yes, he is dead.” A senior intelligence official concurred separately. Neither gave details as to when or 부산 마사지 how the militant died.

The intelligence official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record.

In late January, a tribal elder told the AP that he attended Mehsud’s funeral in the Mamuzai area of the Orakzai tribal region after Mehsud died at his in-laws’ home. Some local media reports, citing unnamed Taliban sources, said Mehsud died more recently in the Multan area of central Pakistan on his way to receive medical treatment in the southern Pakistan city of Karachi.

In the first few days after the mid-January missile strikes, the Taliban released a pair of audiotapes believed to carry Mehsud’s voice, in which he insisted he was fine. They have stopped offering additional evidence, one reason U.S. counterterrorism officials also are increasingly certain he died.

Still, Mehsud has been mistakenly reported dead before.

After his predecessor, fellow tribesman Baitullah Mehsud, died in an August missile strike, the Pakistani interior minister was among those who claimed Hakimullah was killed in a succession struggle. But the militant met with reporters, on camera, in the weeks afterward and went on to lead a surge of bomb attacks across the country that left more than 600 people dead.

Hakimullah Mehsud has been considered a particularly ruthless Taliban fighter with grand ambitions.

He appeared in a video with a Jordanian suicide bomber who killed seven CIA employees in eastern Afghanistan. After that Dec. 30 attack, the U.S. temporarily ramped up its missile campaign in Pakistan’s tribal areas.

There are reports that commanders already are lining up to vie for his position as Taliban chief.

Among the potential successors are Waliur Rehman, the deputy Taliban commander who oversaw operations in the South Waziristan region. The Pakistani army is waging an offensive in that Afghan border area against the group that has damaged much of its infrastructure.

Another name being floated is that of Maulvi Toofan, a Taliban commander reported to be based in Orakzai, a region gaining importance as militants flee there from South Waziristan.

Malik, the interior minister, also said Wednesday that Pakistan is investigating reports that Qari Hussain, another Hakimullah deputy, had also been killed. If confirmed, Hussain’s death would be a significant blow to the group because he was in charge of training suicide bombers and had close ties to other militant networks.

Analysts say a potential succession struggle in the wake of Mehsud’s death could temporarily weaken the Pakistani Taliban but not cripple its ability to carry out deadly attacks.

The Taliban’s campaign of bomb attacks in towns and cities across Pakistan had eased in recent weeks, although 34 people were killed in twin bombings in Karachi last Friday.

Also Wednesday, a Pakistani army Cobra helicopter gunship crashed in the remote Tirah Valley of Pakistan’s Khyber tribal region near the Afghan border, army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas said.

Another army official said the helicopter’s pilot and gunner are missing and feared dead. He said the crash appeared to have been caused by either bad weather or a mechanical failure. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

On Tuesday, the Defense Ministry said that Afghan forces had managed to evacuate more than 400 of the injured, with 180 taken by coalition helicopters to Bagram Airbase for medical treatment, said Defense Minister Gen

Interior Ministry spokesman Zemeri Bashary said rescuers have recovered 157 bodies from the Salang Pass, a key road that connects the Afghan capital with the north, 대전 안마 over the past two days. The number of deaths had more than doubled from the last reported figure of 64 a day earlier, as rescue teams scrambled to reach survivors.

At a press conference in Kabul, Bashary said 1.5 miles of road have been cleared for ambulances, bulldozers and other road-clearing equipment to get through. About 2,600 people have been rescued so far, he said.

A series of avalanches that were triggered Monday along the 12,700-feet-high pass closed off roads and stranded hundreds of people in snowbound vehicles.

Some of the victims were found frozen to death inside their vehicles, while in other cases, their bodies were strewn along the road, he said.

More than two dozen avalanches had poured tons of snow and ice on the pass, blocking off 2.1 miles of road and burying hundreds of vehicles. The 1.6 mile-long Salang Tunnel, a Soviet-built landmark dating from the 1960s through the Hindu Kush mountains, had been cut off, with dozens of cars, buses and trucks jammed inside.

Some 400 police, along with 100 local volunteers, have been involved in the frantic effort to dig out survivors in the last 24 hours, he said.

Bashary said 135 bodies have been taken to Parwan province to the north while the remainder were taken to Baglan province in the south.

Rescuers reached dozens more of the stranded this morning, including seven children whose mother had died.

Search-and-rescue teams took advantage of clear and sunny weather on the pass to retrieve more victims, said Suhrab Ali Safari, the acting minister of public works.

“Now the weather is good so we’re trying to find more bodies. Most of them we found on the road under the snow,” he said. “The avalanche was very strong. It pushed the cars 200 yards away from the road.”

Emergency rescue workers said among the dozens of vehicles stuck in the high drifts of snow were two buses. In one bus, at least 15 people were found dead.

On Tuesday, the Defense Ministry said that Afghan forces had managed to evacuate more than 400 of the injured, with 180 taken by coalition helicopters to Bagram Airbase for medical treatment, said Defense Minister Gen. Abdul Rahim Wardak.

Some 500 Afghan soldiers were also mobilized to join the police and others in rescue efforts. The international coalition contributed four Chinook helicopters, while the army sent two choppers, several ambulances and several bulldozers, the Afghan National Army said.

I become so jittery and ready to cry ..

Bergman died at his home in Faro, Sweden, Swedish news agency TT said, citing his daughter Eva Bergman. A cause of death wasn’t immediately available.

Through more than 50 films, Bergman’s vision encompassed all the extremes of his beloved Sweden: the claustrophobic gloom of unending winter nights, the gentle merriment of glowing summer evenings and the bleak magnificence of the island where he spent his last years.

Bergman, who approached difficult subjects such as plague and madness with inventive technique and carefully honed writing, became one of the towering figures of serious filmmaking.

He was “probably the greatest film artist, all things considered, since the invention of the motion picture camera,” Woody Allen said in a 70th birthday tribute in 1988.

Bergman first gained international attention with 1955’s “Smiles of a Summer Night,” a romantic comedy that inspired the Stephen Sondheim musical “A Little Night Music.”

“The Seventh Seal,” released in 1957, riveted critics and 전주 안마 audiences. An allegorical tale of the medieval Black Plague years, it contains one of cinema’s most famous scenes — a knight playing chess with the shrouded figure of Death.

“I was terribly scared of death,” Bergman said of his state of mind when making the film, which was nominated for an Academy Award in the best picture category.

The film distilled the essence of Bergman’s work — high seriousness, flashes of unexpected humor and striking images.

In an interview in 2004 with Swedish broadcaster SVT, the reclusive filmmaker admitted that he was reluctant to view his work.

“I don’t watch my own films very often. I become so jittery and ready to cry … and miserable. I think it’s awful,” Bergman said.

Though best known internationally for his films, Bergman was also a prominent stage director. He worked at several playhouses in Sweden from the mid-1940s, including the Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm which he headed from 1963 to 1966. He staged many plays by the Swedish author August Strindberg, whom he cited as an inspiration.

The influence of Strindberg’s grueling and precise psychological dissections could be seen in the production that brought Bergman an even-wider audience: 1973’s “Scenes From a Marriage.” First produced as a six-part series for television, then released in a theater version, it is an intense detailing of the disintegration of a marriage.

Bergman showed his lighter side in the following year’s “The Magic Flute,” again first produced for TV. It is a fairly straight production of the Mozart opera, enlivened by touches such as repeatedly showing the face of a young girl watching the opera and comically clumsy props and costumes.

Bergman remained active later in life with stage productions and occasional TV shows. He said he still felt a need to direct, although he had no plans to make another feature film.

In the fall of 2002, Bergman, at age 84, started production on “Saraband,” a 120-minute television movie based on the two main characters in “Scenes From a Marriage.”

In a rare press conference, the reclusive director said he wrote the story after realizing he was “pregnant with a play.”

“At first I felt sick, very sick. It was strange. Like Abraham and Sarah, who suddenly realized she was pregnant,” he said, referring to biblical characters. “It was lots of fun, suddenly to feel this urge returning.”

The son of a Lutheran clergyman and a housewife, Ernst Ingmar Bergman was born in Uppsala on July 14, 1918, and grew up with a brother and sister in a household of severe discipline that he described in painful detail in the autobiography “The Magic Lantern.”

“He was dragged like an animal,” Anoma said

President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s decision follows his sweeping victory at the polls last month over his former army chief Gen. Sarath Fonseka who had defected to the opposition.

Fonseka, who last year led government troops in their crushing defeat of Tamil Tiger rebels, was dragged out of his office Monday by military police and arrested on charges he plotted to overthrow the government while running the army. He has repeatedly denied similar accusations lobbed at him since the election.

One-time allies, Fonseka and Rajapaksa were both considered heroes by Sri Lanka’s Sinhalese majority for ending the quarter-century civil war. However, their relationship deteriorated after hostilities ended, and Fonseka led the opposition’s attempts to unseat the president in an election last month. Rajapaksa won the election by 17 percentage points.

The new parliamentary poll will choose the country’s next 225 lawmakers, said a senior government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government policy. No date has been set.

If the presidential poll is anything to go by, the contest will be another bitter race between the government and the opposition. Rajapaksa’s party is hoping to secure a two-third majority in the country’s parliament, giving them the absolute majority and entrenching their grip on power.

Fonseka’s arrest leaves a mix of opposition parties – from ultranationalist Sinhalese Marxists to former Tamil separatists – in a difficult spot.

Fonseka’s wife Anoma Fonseka said Tuesday the former army chief has been cut off from family and friends and is being held at a secret location, though the government denied that.

After announcing Monday that Fonseka would face a court martial on sedition charges, the government heaped more accusations on him. A statement Tuesday said the former army chief’s reported call for 대구 마사지 anyone who committed war crimes during the conflict to be prosecuted showed he was “hell-bent on betraying the gallant armed forces of Sri Lanka.”

More than 7,000 civilians were killed in the final months of the fighting that crushed the rebels last spring. Human rights groups have accused the military, which was led by Fonseka at the time, of shelling hospitals and heavily populated civilian areas during the fighting, and the rebels of holding the local population as human shields.

“It seems the government is preparing for the next parliamentary election,” he said at a gathering of opposition leaders, where they also announced a countrywide protest, starting Wednesday.

(Left: An opposition party supporter holds a placard during a protest in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Feb. 3, 2010. Thousands of opposition supporters took to the streets of Sri Lanka’s capital Wednesday to protest the results of the recent presidential election, which they say was marred by fraud.)

Fonseka’s wife, Anoma, told reporters Tuesday that she has not been allowed to meet her husband or told where he is being held.

“He was dragged like an animal,” Anoma said. “Is this what he gets for ending a 30-year war?”

“He never wanted to topple the government, while he was in uniform. While he wore the uniform, he never talked about politics,” she said.

Military spokesman Maj. Gen. Prasad Samarasinghe denied that Fonseka is cut off from family or friends.

“Family members are allowed to see him, and he has been allowed to obtain legal advice also,” he said, adding that the former commander is not even in a cell.

Since the Jan. 26 election, Fonseka has complained that the government was attempting to arrest him on trumped up charges. Even as returns came in, troops surrounded the hotel where he was staying, in a massive show of force. Last week, security forces raided his office and arrested at least 15 of his staff. A number of serving military officers, which the government said were considered to be a threat to national security, have been fired.

The opposition has rejected the results of the presidential election, accusing the government of stealing more than 1 million of Fonseka’s votes during the tallying process, and said it will challenge them in court.

It has also accused the government of a campaign of threats, intimidation and illegal imprisonment of its supporters and activists.By Associated Press Writer Fisnik Abrashi

In the meantime, the judge repeated a previous admonition for the couple “not to make disparaging comments in the presence of the children.” The Lohans are due back in divorce court on Aug

He had previously suggested that Dina Lohan’s drinking and his own drug use may have contributed to the substance abuse problems currently plaguing their daughter, the star of “Mean Girls” and other movies.

Last week, Lindsay Lohan, 21, was arrested for investigation of misdemeanor driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license and felony cocaine possession. She was released on bail and insisted in an e-mail to an entertainment reporter that she was innocent of the allegations, which came just two weeks after she was released from her second stint in rehab this year.

As was the case on Friday, when the Lohans appeared in divorce court in nearby Mineola, a phalanx of entertainment reporters and camera crews converged on the Family Court complex on Monday, hoping for any snippet of Lindsay news; neither parent provided any substantive update on their daughter.

Lohan is doing “everything he possibly can to reunite with his children,” his attorney, John DiMascio Jr., said after the brief court proceeding.

DiMascio declined to comment specifically on the reason for withdrawing the request for 청주 마사지 drug testing, but Lohan said he felt the move would improve his chances of being granted visitation rights with his children.

Lohan currently is permitted only telephone calls with his daughter Aliana, 13, and her brother, Dakota, 10. Because Lindsay and her brother Michael Lohan Jr., 19, are no longer minors, they are not subject to the edicts of Family Court.

Dina Lohan, who was accompanied by her mother, Ann Sullivan, was hardly impressed with her ex-husband’s olive branch.

“There never should have been an order,” she told reporters who swarmed her as she walked to her car in the courthouse parking lot.

Family Court Judge Stacy D. Bennett said she is still awaiting the results of a review by a family therapist; that is due Sept. 6. In the meantime, the judge repeated a previous admonition for the couple “not to make disparaging comments in the presence of the children.”

The alimony agreement will not be made public unless there is an enforcement issue, Wasser said.

“Most of that tracks the pre-nup,” the attorney said, without elaborating.

“The best interests of the children could be harmed” if the arrangement were not sealed, Gordon said.

Spears, 25, and Federline have two sons, 22-month-old Sean Preston Federline and 10-month-old Jayden James Federline.
